Tour 42

Iberian South

And this is our favourite, since, in our opinion, it is the best tour that can be done by motorcycle in Europe.

Long tours combine two or three medium tours or extend one of them to reach more remote areas. This tour combines our two tours in southern Spain, but we call it South Iberian because it can be extended with the Portuguese Algarve and even more areas of Portugal if combined with our Portugal tour.

In the biker aspect, the tour is fabulous, with fantastic secondary roads, perfectly paved, an immense number of curves (15,673 on the basic route), and very little traffic. We often find that foreign clients think that the best area to ride in Spain is the north with the Pyrenees and the Picos de Europa, but Spain is a very mountainous country and the south also has several mountain ranges, which are why this tour takes place. They may not be that high, but its roads are, in our opinion, even better for enjoying the bike, thanks largely to the little traffic they have, and this is the aspect that most represents this tour, in which in several sometimes you will even feel a certain sensation of loneliness when you don't meet anyone on the road.

In terms of landscapes, this tour combines medium and low mountain roads, with a good number of natural parks and also includes some coastal roads.

Regarding accommodation, as always we have given preference to historic buildings, but we have also included several beach hotels, since this is very present throughout the trip with beach destinations in Marbella, Nerja, Cabo de Gata, Alicante and Valencia.

In the cultural aspect it is also a very complete trip, with visits to fabulous cities such as Seville and Granada, but also other very interesting ones from the cultural point of view, such as Córdoba, Valencia, Cuenca, and Úbeda. It will also spend, although it will not spend the night, in places of great tourist interest such as Ronda.

In the gastronomic aspect, this tour is not as spectacular as the one in the Iberian North, but even so, in the south of Spain the food is very good. If you are a fan of game cuisine, on this tour you will have several opportunities to enjoy it, but you will also have the opportunity to visit several Michelin-starred haute cuisine restaurants.

Stage 14

Cuenca →Madrid

350km 5:16h 1130 curves
5 Alternatives routes from 4:23h until 1:50h

This last stage of the trip is so good that you will not notice the fatigue accumulated during these two weeks of travel and it will even seem short.

Extension A

Rest day in Seville

Seville was during the sixteenth century and much of the seventeenth the most prosperous city in the world, since it centred trade with the newly discovered America. This fact, together with the cultural heritage received over the centuries by the different cultures that dominated the city, makes Seville one of the most interesting cities in Europe, which makes a day of rest almost obligatory to visit it in depth.

Extension B

Rest day in Granada

Although we have already taken into account that you will want to visit the Alhambra, planning a relatively short stage to Nerja, a rest day in Granada is highly recommended, not only to be able to visit the Alhambra calmly, but also to visit the city in depth and thus be able to admire its fantastic Cathedral and also be able to enjoy the world capital of Tapas, since those of Granada are, by far, the best.

Extension C

Rest day in Valencia

In Valencia you can visit the City of Arts and Sciences, which consists of several buildings designed by the architect Santiago Calatrava. But if you visit this fabulous group of buildings in depth, you will need a day of rest in this magnificent city that will also give you the opportunity to try the famous Valencian paella, which is a dish that is eaten for lunch, never for dinner.

Extension D

Detour to Gibraltar

The detour to Gibraltar is highly recommended for two reasons. The first is that it is a very unique place, since the historical anachronism that in the 21st century a European country maintains a colony in another makes Gibraltar have a very special atmosphere. But this extension also gives us the opportunity to explore the Sierra de Grazalema in greater depth, one of the best areas in Europe to ride a motorcycle.

Extension E

Detour to Toledo

Toledo, known as the city of the three cultures, since for centuries Jews, Christians and Muslims lived together in peace and tolerance, it is probably the most monumental city in Spain, because in addition to being the capital of Spain for several centuries, the three cultures left a great legacy. For this reason, diverting the trip to start visiting Toledo is a highly recommended extension, especially in the cultural aspect.

Extension F

Rest day in Marbella

Marbella is the Spanish Monte Carlo, where a large part of luxury tourism is concentrated. This fact makes Marbella full of excellent shops and restaurants, and has several beaches and golf courses. But also, if you stay at the hotel that we recommend, you will really want to stay one more day.

Extension G

Detour to Vilamoura

Between the well-known towns of Faro and Albufeira, Vilamoura is one of the best beaches in the Algarve. If you like beach tourism, this extension may be a very good option. Although it does not have the luxury of Marbella, it does have an excellent beach and many places to go for dinner or a drink in the evening.

Extension H

Rest day in Vilamoura

And if we have diverted the trip to Vilamoura, it will make perfect sense to add a day of rest to enjoy its beach. In fact, it could be said that these two extensions should go together, since it makes no sense to get to Vilamoura to have to leave the next day, without having enjoyed a day at the beach.

Hotel Accommodation

We can also, if you wish, take care of your accommodation according to your budget. Thanks to our experience we can provide you with excellent accommodations during your route. These are some of the places where you can rest on this tour:

Guadalupe

This hotel was made by adapting two old buildings, a hospital and a school from the 14th and 15th centuries that were under the control of the monastery, which is directly opposite.

Córdoba

A palace built from a 1st century Roman villa, which also has a Roman baths inside.

Seville

Palace from the early 20th century that was ordered to be built by King Alfonso XII to accommodate international dignitaries who visited the 1929 exhibition. It is considered the best hotel in the city.

Arcos de la Frontera

A new building located in an exceptional place, next to the castle and hanging on the cliff, which offers spectacular views.

Marbella

A 5* GL category hotel complex with a nice swimming pool, direct access to the beach and golf course.

Úbeda

A 16th century palace that was built as the residence of the dean of the funeral chapel of El Salvador, which is right next door.

Cazorla

The Parador de Cazorla is another example of a parador located in the middle of a natural park where no one would be allowed to build a hotel. But since the network of paradores is owned by the state, this exception will allow you to enjoy a beautiful site.

Granada

In 1495, three years after the taking of Granada that ended the reconquest, the Catholic Monarchs ordered to build a convent from one of the Nasrid palaces, where they were even buried until the completion of the Cathedral, where they are now. This convent had several extensions, especially in the 18th century and from 1945 it became one of the three best Paradores in Spain, along with those of Santiago and León.

Nerja

The Nerja hotel is located on a cliff next to the sea with beautiful views, but it also has a panoramic elevator that gives you direct access to the beach.

Cabo de Gata

In Cabo de Gata we have several hotels, all of them 4 *, which we recommend depending on the client's preferences between Golf and Beach.

Alicante

A modern 5 * hotel located in the marina with direct access to the beach.

Valencia

19th century mansion with an excellent location within the city.

Cuenca

A 16th century convent that enjoys spectacular views as it is located at the top of the city, next to the hanging houses.

Toledo

A beautiful 19th century palace that Napoleon III gave to his wife, the empress Eugenía de Montijo, a prominent Spanish aristocrat, who in her time was the most influential woman in Europe.

Gibraltar

Gibraltar has a very small area, so they have to resort to ingenuity to cover basic needs. This hotel is a former luxury cruise ship that have permanently docked in the port

Vilamoura

A modern 5-star hotel with direct access to the beach.
